Artists Statement: My work is focused on the perception and expression of people in motion and their state of emotion; their physical body (in dance, sports, & life) and capturing a little of their spirit. In a word, portraiture. Through a process of study and abstraction I am exploring the dynamics of movement, physical and emotional tensions, gestures and feelings. What is revealed in this study is an essence of what I experience and perceive. I see my portraiture evolving into abstract forms that take a snap shot of the essential being and moment. My early work at art school also followed this theme, and at this point I am returning to this project, including the study of tango / salsa and burlesque dancers, and other performers. Techniques: I am interested in the balance between allowing the sub dominant mind dictate the drawing process, rather than allowing the regular right hand brain literal and conscious draughtsmanship to overrule. Though both have equal importance. I am interested in the use of fast, blind and opposite hand drawing techniques to unveil perceptions of moments that can't otherwise be realised - for example just by regular 'looking' or taking a photograph. Mostly I prefer to work from life rather than photos as this gives completely different results to working from photos. I use photography as part of my creative development, it helps me to see what I am looking for and I will usually have some combination of drawing and photographic development for a painting. I sometimes use photoshop with drawings and photographs to explore composition and details of an art piece.
Painting is a unique revelation - like creating an entity - you are cannot predetermine what is born. It grows, and then it exists. I have exhibited in group shows and I am planning solo shows in the coming year. The first being a solo exhibition of figurative paintings of dancers. Please see the Exhibitions and Experience page for more info. I run art workshops for children and adults in which i share the same techniques I use as the foundation for my art projects. |
